MOOD Lounge tries to salvage liquor license at hearing tomorrow, January 13th

According to the official ABRA notice, the hearing regarding the suspension of the liquor license for the MOOD Lounge at 1318 9th Street NW will be held tomorrow morning at 9:00am at the Reeves Center, 2000 14th Street NW, Suite 400 S.

As everyone knows by now, the MOOD Lounge in Shaw (just half a block south of the City Market at O project) was closed first by the Chief of Police, and subsequently by ABRA, following a double stabbing the night of December 30th, 2011 that left two men, both patrons of the club (one event promoter and one performer) critically wounded. The MOOD Lounge has been the subject of repeated community complaints and well documented ABRA violations in the 11 months it was open. Councilmember Jack Evans has called for it to be permanently shut down.

The MOOD Lounge held its "Grand Opening" event less than a year ago - on January 22nd, 2011. Now, nine days short of that one-year celebration, MOOD is going before the ABRA board to explain how two young men were stabbed, one underage, after a security plan failure following an altercation in the nightclub. Another question likely to be raised is why the witnesses, and the whole inside of the nightclub, reeked of marijuana use when police arrived.

I'm going to do my best to be at the hearing for as long as possible. I'll be live-tweeting and updating Shaw Deserves Better during breaks. If you are able to make it, please come down. I'm sure it'll be entertaining if nothing else.

  1. Any word yet on the outcome of the hearing?

p.s. I've started a blog on the eastern portion of Shaw. Please check it out at and tell me what you think.

  2. NBC4 and WJLA are reporting that Mood Lounge's license has been reinstated.
