Shaw is getting cleaner - Residential Street Sweeping starts tomorrow!

Well, actually the whole city is about to get a little cleaner, not just Shaw... Just a friendly reminder - residential street sweeping season starts back up tomorrow morning. Double check the signs on your street to be sure the time of day for street sweeper violations hasn't changed over the winter - some routes have been adjusted, according to DPW.

Dupont Circle traffic signals to go down; sadly DDOT plans to turn them back on...

It's not in Shaw, but I know a lot of Shaw denizens go to or through nearby Dupont Circle, so I thought I should post it anyway. As someone who actually enjoys driving in Europe where traffic circles are a "get in when you're clear and get out when you're done" setup, I admit I first read this notice with a little bit of glee, thinking DDOT had finally figured out that having lights on a traffic circle was just... well.. stupid, and that they might finally have had the sense to just take them out altogether. Sadly, it's only temporary.

From DDOT:
"On Tuesday, February 28, at approximately 10 am, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily power down the traffic control signals located at Dupont Circle in Northwest Washington. The signals will be turned off for several hours to allow technicians to upgrade the traffic control signalization system. The signals will be turned on prior to the pm rush hour.

Own a piece of Shaw: 440 Rhode Island Avenue, NW #403

440 Rhode Island Avenue NW #401 has been on the market for 138 days. This unit is in a building on the VERY busy Rhode Island Avenue, merely 2 blocks from the last unit we reviewed at 605 Rhode Island. It is in a newer building built a few years ago and is on the top floor of a 4-story building. This unit has new appliances, granite counters, and gorgeous hardwood floors.

MOOD Lounge transcripts from first noise violation and Summary Suspension hearings now available

The long-awaited transcripts of both the December 7th 2011 Noise Violation Show Cause Status Hearing and subsequent Show Cause hearing (which resulted in a guilty verdict against the MOOD Lounge) and the January 13th Summary Suspension hearing by ABRA against the MOOD Lounge were finally released today. All three documents after the jump.

Stolen puppy in Shaw

An awful situation from the Shaw Dogs listserv:
Yesterday morning about 8am, a gentleman came to the 11th St  dog park and reported that his neighbors witnessed 3 teenagers breaking into his home, to steal his 10-month old puppy (a female pit bull, fawn-colored, with a silver choke chain collar).  He heard later reports that those same kids were hanging out at the 11th St skate park, with the dog, and he asked those of us there if we'd seen her.
We encouraged him to put a flyer up in the park with her picture (I'm out of town now, so I don't know if he did).  I promised him I'd also send a note to the listserv...  I'm not sure what anyone can do, but I know how miserable I'd be if my puppy got stolen.  The police have been contacted.  If anyone sees a dog with kids matching that description, that's where I would start.

Is Shaw losing a great new business?

UPDATE: Shaw, sadly, is losing Shakti Mind Body Studio in mid-March. The space is available for $3600 per month and is 1,000 sqft, including bamboo floors and a half bath. Contact the building owner Pete at 240-476-5599 for more information. Conveniently, he's also a builder, so if you need help with the fit-out, he could probably help you!

Thanks to the reader who spotted this and sent it in this morning - apparently there's a new "For Rent" sign on the front of Shakti Mind Body Studio at 1302 9th Street NW. Their website still shows this as their "new home", but apparently the sign out front says the space is available as of September.

Shaw is getting better - Blind Dog Cafe

From the ShawNeighborhood listserv:

"My wife and I noticed this place yesterday and stopped in for coffee and some delicious baked goods for breakfast. It's on the corner of Sherman and Florida. It looks like a great (and locally owned) addition to the neighborhood and has a super-friendly staff and welcoming space. From Noah (the owner):

Shaw Deserves Better than this awful architecture: 926 N Street to be redeveloped

A few weeks ago, we profiled the abandoned building at 926 N Street NW at the northern entrance to Historic Blagden Alley. As a response to that posting, we got an awesome rendering from a reader of what could be done with the awful existing building if a total redevelopment wasn't in the cards just yet.

However, now it appears that United House of Prayer, the owners of the site, have decided to redevelop into condominiums or apartments. Convention Center Community Association President Martin Moulton  released some early design options for the site on his blog a few weeks ago. According to Moulton, the early design is a roughly 5,000 sqft building of three floors, with two retail bays facing N Street at 2,418 and 804 sqft, respectively, and one three bedroom unit, six two bedroom units, five one bedroom units, and two studio apartments, for a total of 14 apartments. The architecture, however, is dreadful to say the least.

Martin Moulton of the Convention Center Community Association passed along this photo of the DC flag in tatters at the Kipp School in Shaw this morning to the neighborhood listserv.

Should the DC Dept. of Health consider nearby drug arrests in placement of Medical Marijuana Dispensaries?

From the Convention Center Community Association President Martin Moulton:

"The alleged offender, with possession w/ intent to distribute IN A DRUG FREE ZONE? The arrest easily took place w/in 500 feet of The Kennedy Rec Center, The Center City Public Charter School, the children's tot lot behind 1330 apts and the new park w/ tot lot on the 600 b/o N St NW and should warrant (at least) doubling the penalties.

MOOD Lounge Found GUILTY for the first of five pending noise violations

In perhaps a divine act of irony, the same day that the MOOD Lounge published a statement in the Ethiopian Times stating "Despite these accusations and the relentless harassment by this group of neighbors that accompany them [empasis by editor], to date, the Mood Lounge has not been found

Own a piece of Shaw: 605 Rhode Island Avenue, NW #3

Photos Courtesy of MRIS and Michael Moore,
TTR Sotheby’s International Realty
605 Rhode Island Avenue #3 has been on the market for 114 days. This unit is in a townhouse on the VERY busy Rhode Island Avenue. It has 3 units in the building and occupies the top floor. You avoid the noise of neighbors above you and have no one on either side. This unit has been beautifully updated and has all new appliances, a gas fireplace, new granite counters, and gorgeous hardwood floors. It has separate dining area and a HUGE parking pad. It was converted in 2003 and still shows like new. Coming in at almost 900 sq ft it is listed for $445 a sq ft. The average in Shaw is currently around $504 a sq ft and the condo fees are very reasonable at $199/month. This unit is on Rhode Island between 6th and 7th Streets. It is close to all that Shaw and U Street have to offer and it is VERY close to the Shaw Metro - .19 miles and a 15 minute walk to Logan/Dupont.

The details in this place are terrific and do a lot to
make up for the busy street!

Beautiful in Shaw - Independence Bank Shaw Clock

This series of posts will focus on something beautiful in Shaw - a particularly striking house, a beautiful garden, architectural elements, people, pets - whatever and wherever I (or any of you) find something that makes you smile. Feel free to send ideas (and photos!) to me at

Shaw is one of the only neighborhoods in Washington DC to have an old-fashioned street clock. There's one downtown, and one on Barracks Row over on the Hill. Ours, likely a gift from Independence Bank (since it's in front of the bank and their name is inscribed across the top...), shines brightly just north of the intersection of 9th and N Streets, NW. I always smile when I see it during the day, but it catches my eye so much more when it glows at night. What do you guys think about the clock?

MPD is awesome in Shaw: Mugger caught!

On Wednesday, February 01, 2012, at around 8:55 PM, the victim was walking in the alley between New Jersey Ave and 4th St, near Richardson Pl NW, when she was approached by two suspects. One of the suspects struck the victim in the face with his fist. They took her purse and fled on foot. One of the suspects was apprehended on the scene by an alert citizen while the other one continued to flee on foot. The victim’s purse was recovered. The unknown suspect is described as a black male with shoulder length dread locks, approximately 5’9” in height wearing all dark clothing last seen fleeing towards Florida Ave NW. The defendant was transported to the Fifth District for processing and further investigation by detectives. He is an adult male and his identity will be made available once it has been confirmed.

The victim sustained non life threatening injuries and was transported to a local area hospital for treatment.

What happened to the trash can at 5th and Q?

From the Shaw Listserv:

I noticed yesterday that the trash can at 5th and Q was removed, and a new stop sign was placed there instead.

While I've noticed lately that there has been a lot of household garbage in garbage bags overflowing around the area, removing this will just contribute to more waste on our streets. Hopefully it's not gone for good, or can be replaced somewhere nearby.
